New Stardew Valley-like game on Steam receives rave reviews

Published on August 5 Fields of Mistria is already attracting the attention of Steam users, as the Stardew Valley-inspired farming RPG has a 98% positive rating on Valve’s platform. At the time of writing Fields of Mistria is in Early Access starting at $13.99 and is receiving universal praise from Steam players, with its art style being one of the game’s strengths.

Developed and published by Chicago-based NPC Studio, Fields of Mistria is inspired by farming simulators such as Stardew Valley And Harvest Moonand mixes in some exploration and RPG elements that reward players for completing activities on their farm and in the surrounding area. However, Fields of Mistria added a dose of nostalgia to the design, as the art style is reminiscent of SNES-era titles as well as 1990s anime, such as Sailor MoonThe eponymous city of Mistria is a place full of dormant magic that the player character must discover. Fields of Mistria also includes options for player pronouns and appearance, as well as up to 12 available NPCs that players can court throughout the game’s story.

Although Fields of Mistria will be in Early Access for about a year before the 1.0 release, but that hasn’t stopped Steam players from expressing their excitement for the new indie title. According to the Steam page, Field of Mistria has an “overwhelmingly positive” rating of 98%, with many reviews praising the game’s environments, anime references, and polished gameplay despite its Early Access status. Fields of Mistria players also provided constructive feedback on what could be improved over the course of Early Access, such as improved sword damage and collision detection, further upgrades to the inventory system and stamina meter, and adding more potential romance options over time.

Despite the quick start, NPC Studio already has plans to keep players engaged during Early Access. Fields of MistriaThe next update is scheduled to arrive in the last quarter of 2024 and will include an increased progression cap for NPC hearts that can be romanced, as well as some special events for players that maximize a character’s affection. The rank cap for the city of Mistria will also be increased by 20 levels, with a new festival and rewards for players to earn. Players are encouraged to report bugs and provide feedback.


While Stardew Valley still has secrets to tell even years after its release, Fields of Mistria wants to offer players a new take on the farming genre with a dash of nostalgia. How NPC Studio will continue this strong start remains to be seen.
