New fire breaks out near Kelly

KELLY, Wyoming – A new fire has been discovered in the Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) south of Gros Ventre Ranch.

The Slide Lake Fire is burning on the hill across from the local swimming lake, known locally as “Kelly Cliffs.” Buckrail has learned.

Employees of Grand Teton National Park (GTNP), whose boundary is near the incident, were seen driving toward the fire burning near the Gros Ventre River east of Kelly on Monday evening, August 12. Passersby at the scene said they reported the fire and officials said they were already aware of the fire.

Both BTNF and GTNP have resources on the ground to fight the wildfire, which BTNF said covered about 0.25 acres as of Monday evening.

The fire is not yet listed on the government’s forest fire monitoring website, InciWeb.

Although the fire is outside of its jurisdiction, GTNP is working with the local Teton Interagency Fire Team on wildfires in the region.

“As far as we know, it is a small fire,” said Jeremy Barnum, press spokesman for the GTNP, Buckrail.

BTNF has observed several smaller 0.1-acre fires in recent weeks. It remains unclear if this new incident will remain small or develop into a larger fire.

This is an ongoing incident and Buckrail will keep you updated with the latest developments..
