Nebraska Senators adjourn for today after roll call

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KSNB) – After passing a second vote on Friday, not much happened in the House Monday morning.

It was a very unusual set of circumstances, as the Senators went through the names of those present for the day and then adjourned the session.

As for the bill they are considering, LB34, it is very different from what they had in mind at the beginning of the session. It does not impose new taxes to reduce property taxes, and the bill aims to limit local government spending. It would also make it easier to access property tax credits in Nebraska.

Grand Island Senator Ray Aguilar said he feels they are nearing the finish line.

“Progress is going well. It has been a long and arduous journey to get to where we are now. Hopefully we can finish this week and return home,” Aguilar said.

Aguilar expressed his hope that they would reach the number of votes needed to pass the bill in the special session.

“Honestly, I think everyone, even the people who were against it at first, will be on board to make sure it passes,” Aguilar said.

Aguilar said while he was optimistic the bill would pass this week, there could be a delay.

“The only obstacle I foresee would be if one of the senators might try to add something and thereby withdraw one of the bills from the final reading,” Aguilar said.

The third round of debate is expected to begin Tuesday morning. Governor Jim Pillen said these caps on local government spending are critical to the bill. If the caps are lower, the governor threatened to veto the bill.
