Grab your grandmas and grandpas, nanas and grandpas, kitties and peepaws, because Wednesday, August 21st, it’s all about them.

August 21 is National Seniors Day and marks the 36th year since President Ronald Reagan issued the proclamation declaring this day in 1988.

“National Senior Citizens Day recognizes the achievements of our nation’s more mature representatives,” the National Day Calendar website states. “The day provides an opportunity to express our appreciation for their dedication, achievements and service throughout their lives.”

To mark the holiday, here are some activities, discounts and services you can take advantage of as a senior citizen.

Senior Citizens Day event in Wellington Village

The Village of Wellington Senior Services celebrates National Seniors Day each year with a special event for Wellingtonians age 50 and older. The event is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Wellington Community Center and features live entertainment, a free lunch, and more.

Seniors in Wellington can register through the activity registration page. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Wellington Community Center. 12150 Forest Hill Blvd, Wellington. The Town of Wellington has also partnered with Freebee to provide a free door-to-door shuttle for residents over 55.

“Step In Friday” at Kofi’s Not so Wine and Wifi Bar

Kofi’s Not so Wine and Wifi Bar wants you to start your Friday morning on the dance floor. Every Friday at 11am, the bar hosts a “Step In Friday” line dance party. On Friday nights from 5:30pm to 8pm, seniors receive 20% off menu items.

Tickets are free and can be purchased here. The event will take place at 1005 President Barack Obama Highway, Riviera Beach..

Tai Chi classes at the Norton Art Museum

The Norton Museum of Art offers free Tai Chi classes on Thursdays during June, July and August.

Classes, which run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., are led by Juying Janowsky, a certified Tai Chi teacher from the city of Liuzhou, China. Students of all levels are welcome. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing and sneakers or other supportive footwear. It is also recommended that you bring water and a cell phone or camera to record movements for home practice.

The program will take place on the museum’s North Lawn at Jefferson Road and South Olive Avenue.

Celebrate National Senior Citizens Day with Meals on Wheels in Palm Beach

Meals On Wheels of the Palm Beaches delivers nutritious meals and conducts wellness checks for seniors ages 65 and older who are homebound or mostly homeless in Palm Beach County. On National Senior Citizens Day, the organization is urging the community to get involved. Interested volunteers can visit www.MOWPB.org. To make a donation, click here.

Senior discounts and offers in the Palm Beach County area

Shopping deals at Kohl’s, Ross, Walgreens

  • Kohl’s: Customers age 60 and older receive 15% off qualified purchases every Wednesday in our stores. ID is required to redeem the coupon.
  • Horse: Ross’ 55+ Tuesday discount program offers customers age 55 and older 10% off purchases on Tuesdays. Eligible customers must notify associate at time of purchase and may be required to provide ID for age verification.
  • Walgreens: The first Tuesday of every month is Senior Citizens Day at Walgreens. Customers age 55 and older can benefit from exclusive senior citizen discounts. Proof of age may be required.

Entertainment: AMC Theaters, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Marlins baseball tickets

  • AMC Cinemas: Every day before 4 p.m. you will receive a 25% discount on evening ticket prices. Seniors aged 60 and over can purchase tickets at reduced senior prices.
  • Boca Raton Museum of Art: General admission tickets are free in August and September. Tickets include a one-hour docent-led tour at 2 p.m. daily. Tickets normally cost $12 for seniors ages 65 and older.
  • Marlins Senior Days: Presented by Faith Healthcare, seniors age 65 and older can receive two free tickets to select Marlins games. Fans can visit the North Ticket Office with an ID and then enter through the Third Base Dugout Club entrance. The next select game is Thursday, September 5 at 6:40 p.m. against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Discounted rides and tickets for Palm Tran and Tri-Rail

  • Palm Tran: Seniors age 65 and older can ride Palm Tran buses for half the price of a single cash fare with a valid Florida driver’s license or state ID, and receive a discounted fare on all QUIK passes and select limited-use Paradise Pass tickets.
  • Three-rail rail: With a valid driver’s license, birth certificate, Medicare card and/or photo ID with date of birth, seniors age 65 and older can obtain a Discounted Fare EASY Card for a $2 fee. The card offers 50% off single-fare, round-trip and monthly passes, or can be loaded with cash so the cost of a discounted single-fare ticket is deducted from each ride. Passengers must pre-qualify and bring eligibility forms to a ticket booth with a photo station to receive the card with their photo, or request it online.
