For the first time in their decade-long history, local National Night Out celebrations were not protected by the so-called Bluffton bubble, a mythical ability to keep storms at bay. However, plans for food, fun and fireworks on Tuesday night were successfully postponed until Wednesday, August 7, after severe storms and tornado threats were forecast.

Event coordinator Lt. Matt Oglesbee of the Bluffton Police Department was pleased with the turnout for the delayed event and the weather that allowed for the fireworks. Has the event gotten easier as time has gone on? Oglesbee said it actually has. He also thanked the Bluffton High School boys and girls soccer teams for doing some of the literal heavy lifting: carrying the tables and chairs in and out of the Bluffton Community Pool.

The volunteers working the grill seemed to believe that free hot dogs are the biggest crowd-pleaser at National Night Out. Councilman Mitch Kingsley said that while they did run out of hot dogs once or twice, it only happened after some people had waited in line three times.

However, the lines for a ride in two vintage fire engines – the Bluffton No. 1 Studebaker fire engine and the Riley Twp-Pandora Dodge truck from a few decades ago – were as long as the lines for hot dogs. The ride is standing and may have felt quicker than it actually was with the wind in everyone’s hair.

Other attractions included free swimming, “Touch a Truck” with local rescue crews and the Bluffton Fire Department, miniature golf, the Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District interactive exhibit, inflatable games and target practice with fire hoses.
