NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — On Sunday, the National Dominican Day Parade will take place again in New York City, a celebration of culture, pride and community.

This year, marchers and spectators are celebrating the 42nd anniversary of the parade, which begins at noon. The parade runs along the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) from 37th Street to 55th Street.

ABC 7 New York is a proud sponsor of the National Dominican Day Parade and will stream the event on abc7NY.com, our mobile and Connected TV apps, and on YouTube.

The motto of this year’s parade is “Merengue: Nuestro Ritmo.” According to officials, the motto is intended to recognize merengue as more than just a musical genre, but rather as an essential part of Dominican identity.

“We are celebrating the 175th anniversary of the festival. We will be bringing the community closer to its roots, where the ritmo comes from, where the rhythm originally came from, and exploring the original instruments used,” said Gregoria Feliciano, one of the board members of the National Dominican Day Parade. “Merengue really evokes in us a sense of joy, unity, pride and hope. It has a really festive melody.”

This year’s Grand Marshall will be Los Hermanos Rosario, a band known for Merengue.

The parade is not only about celebrating Dominican heritage, but also about raising funds and helping young students achieve their academic goals through the scholarship program.

Since the program’s launch in 2015, the National Dominican Day Parade has provided over $1 million in scholarships to over 200 students in 20 states. By providing scholarships, parade organizers and board members hope to help students of Dominican descent earn a college degree.
