Nathan Rourke rusty in first game after return with BC Lions

Nathan Rourke was clearly showing rust when he returned to the CFL on Sunday night.

The 2022 Canadian Most Outstanding Player completed 8 of 25 passes for 126 yards and zero touchdowns with two interceptions as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers marched to a 20-11 victory and handed the BC Lions their fourth consecutive loss.

Rourke was playing his first CFL game since rejoining the Lions earlier this week. He and the Lions struggled to get going on offense all night. Deatrick Nichols intercepted him in the second quarter and Tyrell Ford intercepted him later in the same quarter.

Zach Collaros threw for 288 yards with a touchdown and an interception to secure the win for the Blue Bombers. BC’s only touchdown came on the final play of the game with Rourke on the sideline.

The 26-year-old Victoria, BC native was claimed off the NFL waivers list last Monday after being released after just over a week with the Atlanta Falcons. He played a couple of drives for Atlanta in their first preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, completing three of 13 passes for 37 yards.

Rourke was released by the New York Giants shortly after training camp began last month. New York claimed Rourke off waivers from the New England Patriots, where he finished last season, on May 7. He was inactive for two games before being called up as a backup in the Patriots’ final regular-season game against the New York Jets on Jan. 7.

Rourke originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars after playing two seasons with the Lions.

BC (5-5) will be back in action next Saturday night in Ottawa against the Redblacks (6-2-1).
