EAST LANSING, Michigan – Junior midfielder for the Michigan State men’s soccer team Jonathan Stout was named to the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy watch list on Thursday. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is given annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.

Stout is the first Spartan on the list since Giuseppe Barone and Patrick Nielsen were named to the Hermann Watch List in 2019. Previously, Ryan Sierakowski was honored in 2017. Goaltender Avery Steinlage was named to the Watch List in 2010. In 2014, midfielder Jay Chapman was named a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy, becoming the first Spartan in school history to accomplish the feat.

A native of Wyoming, Michigan, Stout was the team’s second-leading scorer last season with 10 points from five goals. The midfielder was also named to the Big Ten preseason list of players to watch. Stout was also named to the All-Big Ten first team as a sophomore. He was also named to the All-North Region first team.

Stout is the only other Big Ten player, along with Indiana’s Samuel Sarver, to make the Hermann Watch List. A total of 16 players were named to the Watch List.

The list of 2024 candidates was compiled by members of the Division I Men’s All-America Council from a list of returning 2023 All-Americans as well as First Team All-Region players. A total of 15 players will be named 2024 Hermann Trophy semifinalists on December 11 following the conclusion of NCAA Division I All-American voting. From this list, head coaches will cast their votes and three players will be named finalists. The 2024 award winner will be announced on January 3, 2025, at a ceremony at the Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis, Missouri.

The Spartans open the season on Friday, August 22nd at 9 p.m. ET at No. 25 SIUE.
