Monitoring a rural road can be a difficult task in Washington County

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Maine (WABI) – A rural road in Washington County, Maine, was difficult to monitor.

“There’s a speeding problem up there. We’re trying to address it, but we just don’t have the staff to go out there and handle the complaints that we handle. We get a lot of complaints up there,” said Washington County Sheriff Barry Curtis.

Due to geography and resources, monitoring inland Washington County is more difficult than more densely populated coastal areas.

“Our population is on the lower end, and so all of the cases we handle are in the lower parts of the county. So it’s basically difficult for our folks to do both at the same time without just driving out there and spending a whole day doing it,” Curtis explained.

Given the problematic road users on the roads, it is important that road users remain alert and attentive.

“You have to be careful up there because there is a lot going on up there. The speed limit up there is for a reason. We don’t want a lot of people getting hurt and these accidents are unnecessary,” Curtis added.

If drivers see someone breaking the law, authorities say it’s best to file a report.

“If you see someone speeding, call. We’re taking those calls because if we can’t get it under control in Washington County, we can probably get it in Hancock County and lock people up there. You know, pull them over,” Curtis advised.
