Mondo Duplantis breaks the pole vault world record for the tenth time

Mondo Duplantis broke the men’s pole vault world record for the tenth time, jumping 6.26 metres at a Diamond League meeting in Poland on Sunday.

Duplantis, 24, broke the record 20 days after doing so at the Paris Olympics, where he became the first person in 68 years to repeat his Olympic gold medal in the pole vault.

Also in Paris, he was the first person to reach a height of over 6 metres.

Before Duplantis’ rise, the world record was 6.16 metres, set by Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie in 2014.

Since February 2020, Duplantis has improved the world record ten times by the smallest possible difference – one centimeter.

Duplantis followed the same record-breaking strategy as Ukrainian Sergey Bubka, who maximized his bonus money in the 1980s and 1990s by raising the bar inch by inch.

Bubka broke the outdoor world record 17 times and the indoor world record 18 times between 1984 and 1994, before World Athletics moved to setting a world record for the indoor-outdoor combination.

Duplantis was born and raised in Louisiana and represents Sweden, where his mother is from.

According to Tilastopaja.org, he has lost only four times since the beginning of 2020, while winning more than 70 times.

The next stop of the Diamond League is on Friday in Rome, live on peacock from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.
