Nico Hoerner led off with a walk in the eighth inning against Chad Kuhl (0-2) and reached second on Swanson’s single. Pete Crow-Armstrong put the runners in front with a sacrifice bunt and Amaya hit a two-run single, giving the Cubs a 3-1 lead and their eighth win in 10 games.

Swanson capped an unforgettable day by hitting two singles, giving him 1,001 career hits and scoring a run, hours after his wife, Mallory, scored the only goal as the U.S. women’s national team defeated Brazil to win the Olympic gold medal.

Justin Steele pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run and six hits. The left-hander had eight strikeouts and two walks.

Porter Hodge (1-1) retired all three batters in the seventh inning. Jorge López threw only a single and a walk in the eighth inning and ended that threat with strikeouts from Korey Lee and Corey Julks.

Héctor Neris made his 17th save in 21 chances in the ninth inning. He dropped a pitch that covered first base, allowing Brooks Baldwin to reach first base, and then retired the next three batters as the North Siders completed a four-game season sweep of the South Siders. The Cubs (59-60) also put themselves in position to hit .500 for the first time since June 5, when they beat the White Sox at Wrigley Field to improve their record to 31-31.

The White Sox lost for the 24th time in 25 games and fell 63 games under .500 at 28-91, a franchise record. They are 0-2 since firing manager Pedro Grifol and replacing him on an interim basis with Grady Sizemore.

The White Sox took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Miguel Vargas got on base on an error by second baseman Hoerner and scored on a single by Baldwin.

The Cubs tied the game in the fifth inning when Cody Bellinger hit a single with two outs and scored on Isaac Paredes’ double to left from third base. Baldwin, the White Sox shortstop, took the throw from Andrew Benintendi and held onto the ball rather than trying to move the runner to the plate.

White Sox starter Chris Flexen allowed three hits in four scoreless innings. The right-hander walked four and threw 78 pitches in his 17th consecutive winless game since beating Tampa Bay on May 8.

Summary of Friday’s first game

Ian Happ hit a home run for the first time, Cody Bellinger had a hit and the Chicago Cubs hit four home runs before beating the White Sox from across town 7-6 on Friday night, botching the debut for manager Grady Sizemore.

The White Sox, led by Andrew Benintendi’s two home runs, nearly overcame a 7-0 deficit but fell in their first game since firing manager Pedro Grifol and replacing him with Sizemore as interim. They made the move Thursday, two days after ending a 21-game losing streak that tied the American League record.

The White Sox had all bases loaded in the ninth inning against Héctor Neris. But the right-hander put Andrew Vaughn out of action with a fly to center and made his 16th save in 20 chances.

“I think these games against the White Sox are always a little crazy,” Cubs starter Jameson Taillon said. “We probably all knew they were going to fight back, but they weren’t dead and they weren’t done over there. No matter what kind of year they’re having, they’re still in the major leagues and this is a rivalry game and it’s exciting, there are a lot of fans in the stands.”

Happ hit his sixth career home run. Bellinger added a two-run drive in the first inning and finished the game with three hits.

Isaac Paredes and Nico Hoerner hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning, and the Cubs hit four in that inning while chasing White Sox starter Garrett Crochet (6-9) to take a 7-0 lead. But instead of an easy win, the North Siders were forced to earn their seventh victory in nine games.

“It was definitely a great start after a bad day,” Bellinger said. “It just feels good to get going and Happer there got going really fast.”

The White Sox lost for the 23rd time in 24 games and fell 62 games below their .500 record, a franchise record, at 28-90. They joined the 1916 Philadelphia A’s (26-91-1) as the only teams to lose 90 or more in their first 118 games.

“It was an incredible performance,” Sizemore said. “It was incredible to see those guys fight like that and the energy. They just kept fighting and throwing good at-bats and supporting each other. I’m happy for them. I’m happy for those guys, the way they played, the effort. I keep saying that, but it was fun to watch. I was proud to be on the top step and watch those guys compete.”

Vaughn opened the fourth with his 14th home run, scoring four runs. Benintendi scored first in the fifth against Taillon (8-6) and then narrowed the score to 7-6 with a solo drive in the seventh against Drew Smyly. He has now hit four home runs in the last three games and 13 on the season.

Crochet allowed a career-high four home runs and gave up seven runs. The left-hander allowed nine hits in 2 1/3 innings, the sixth straight start in which the All-Star didn’t have a pitcher until the fifth inning.

Taillon played five innings and allowed five runs and nine hits.
