MLB manager confirms catcher will play for both teams in the same game

Danny Jansen will make history by becoming the first player in MLB history to play for both teams in the same game.

On June 26, Jansen was at bat for the Toronto Blue Jays and fouled Boston Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford. After Jansen’s foul, the umpires stopped the game because it began to pour with rain at Fenway Park.

Play resumes Tuesday, but this time Jansen will be behind the plate in a Red Sox uniform, meaning he will be just a few feet away from the player who retired from batting two months ago.

On July 27, Jansen was part of a trade between the Red Sox and the Blue Jays. The possibility of him playing for both teams in the same game appealed to Red Sox manager Alex Cora. On Friday, the Red Sox captain confirmed that Jansen will fill in as catcher for the remainder of the game, as the Red Sox’s original catcher for the game, Reese McGuire, has since been demoted to the minor leagues.

“On Monday, by the way, (Jansen) will play Game 1, for anybody who’s watched history,” Cora said. “I’ve been getting texts from Jayson Stark and Buster Olney: ‘Is he a catcher?’ Yes, he’s a catcher. Let’s make history.”

According to MLB.com, there is one known case in professional baseball where a player played for both teams in the same game. Dale Holman played for both the Syracuse Chiefs and the Richmond Braves in a 1986 International League game.

Holman was released by the Chiefs’ parent club Toronto after a game between the two clubs was suspended. Before the two teams resumed play, he was signed by Richmond’s parent club Atlanta. He finished the game having scored a goal for both clubs.
