Mistrial for Gwinnett father facing charges in death of 8-year-old daughter

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – A mistrial has been declared in the case of a Gwinnett County father on trial in connection with the death of his 8-year-old daughter.

Cledir Barros was charged with child abuse in connection with the death of his daughter Sayra. The prosecution argued that Barros was partly responsible for his daughter’s death.

The case will be retried starting Monday, August 19, and a jury will be selected and a new judge will be assigned to the case.

According to investigators, on January 30, stepmother Natiela Barros, who is accused of murder, became angry with 8-year-old Sayra and allegedly hit her in the neck 10 to 20 times with a rolling pin. Then Natiela called work. When he got home, he allegedly prayed for Sayra for 10 to 20 minutes before calling 911.

Cledir had previously stated in the witness stand that he was a religious man and had never harmed his daughter.

Initially, Cledir was also charged with premeditated murder, but the charges were dropped during the trial.
