Mina Starsiak and her family experience an emotional new beginning when they return to HGTV

(Warning: The following contains HUGE spoilers for Good Bones: A New Beginning Episode 1, “Mina, take the lake.”)

Good bones is back and getting to work when it comes to renovations, as a limited spin-off, Good Bones: A New Beginning saw Mina Starsiak Hawk embark on a new project: a lake house for herself, her husband and their children to enjoy for years to come. But her attempt to transform the house is disrupted by some big and emotional changes for the family.

While this may be the beginning of a new chapter, it also marks the end of another, as Mina has closed the Two Chicks and a Hammer headquarters in hopes of using the proceeds from the sale to fund renovations to her lake house. But the difficult decision was not easy, as Mina was informed that the check used to pay for the property was forged, leaving her to search for a replacement tenant or buyer.

Eventually Mina finds a tenant, but that draws her attention to District Co., Mina’s business, which she fears will be a failure. The decision to close it is hard for her husband Steve, who regrets the loss of such an important space that holds so many memories. As they sort out details about their other properties, Mina’s friends and roommates ask Good bones Veterinarians MJ Coyle and Austin Aynes are assisting with the renovation process.

While Good bones Normally, the first episode would feature Mina and her mother, Karen E. Laine, but after this first episode, it’s clear that things will remain separate as they tackle various renovation projects. Karen does not appear in the first episode, and Mina’s ongoing tensions with her mother were not addressed in the episode, although she spoke openly about the disintegration of her family in recent years.

Instead, the episode highlighted the emotional journey Mina, Steve and their children take as they close the chapter of the original District Co. location and ultimately plan to open a new one in Noblesville, Indiana. Leaving the old store brings back memories, particularly of Steve’s sister Stefanie, who died in 2020. Stef’s pictures hung on the wall in the original store, leading to an emotional moment for Mina and Steve as they packed up the old District Co.

The episode ended with the family moving into their lake house and inviting others to a celebration. Although there are still big changes to come, it is clear that Mina and her family are taking the changes in their stride. What did you think about Good bones‘ back?
