Microsoft would like to inform you that day-one releases are no longer the “standard” on Xbox Game Pass

A few weeks before a new level is introduced to Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft has released a Blog with details on how the service’s standard plan will work for subscribers starting September 12.

Standard costs $15/month and the biggest change is the loss of access to first-party games from day one. Microsoft says these titles could potentially be added to the Standard tier “at a later date,” which could be up to a year or more after their release, depending on the game.

With this wording, the implication seems to be that some first-party titles may not be available to standard subscribers, which would theoretically encourage switching to another plan that did have these games.

The new tier was introduced “to give players more choice” in pricing and plans. Since it’s currently limited to Xbox consoles, it’s intended to serve as a middle ground between Game Pass Core ($10/month) and Game Pass Ultimate ($20/month).

In particular, Game Pass Standard will be released before the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Arrival on the larger service. While this game will be available to all levels (at least according to Microsoft in May), the fate of other first-party titles is uncertain.

Xbox Insiders currently have access to Game Pass Standard to try it out ahead of the larger launch on September 12.
