Michigan’s quarterbacks “were all really good” and offer little clarity about the starter

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore met with reporters on Tuesday, and while many will focus on his statements regarding the NCAA investigation and his text messages, Moore also revealed some important details about the Wolverines.

One position he didn’t give much insight into is quarterback. Moore talked about the quarterbacks, but didn’t reveal who might start for Michigan football in the season opener against Fresno State.

“They’ve all been really good,” Moore said, via Alejandro Zuniga of The Michigan Insider. “They’ve had their days where one guy was good, one guy was really good, one guy was better, so no frontrunner. Right now, everyone’s playing, really, and we’ll see how we approach this week, next week and then game week.”

It seems there is a good chance that the competition for the quarterback position will extend into the regular season, as was the case with the Michigan Wolverines in 2022. Cade McNamara started the first game before JJ McCarthy started the second and took over the job for good.

I’ve always hoped Alex Orji would take the bull by the horns, win the job and never look back. Since he’s a true dual threat, he could be the best weapon if he can find a way to be precise and control the offense.

McCarthy and McNamara were both excellent defenders when it came to defending the ball from 2021-2023, and that will be a key trait for the Michigan Wolves’ starting quarterback.

Moore said Jack Tuttle hasn’t been limited in training camp. There have been rumors that he’s still dealing with an injury. The Michigan football head coach also talked about first-year quarterback Jadyn Davis, so maybe he’s closer to playing than fans expected.

I’m still betting on Alex Orji to start Michigan football’s first game, but right now, at least according to Moore, the race is still wide open.
