Michigan man receives another life sentence for kidnapping death of 2-year-old

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (AP) — A federal judge has sentenced a Michigan man who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and killing his ex-girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter to a second life sentence.

U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker sentenced Rashad Trice on Friday, a week after he was sentenced in Ingham County District Court to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the girl’s murder and to 60 to 90 years in prison for assaulting her mother, the Detroit News reported.

According to prosecutors, in July 2023, Trice got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend in their Lansing apartment. She stabbed Trice, who then stabbed her multiple times and sexually assaulted her. Then he left.

The woman went to her mother’s apartment in the same complex, leaving behind her one-year-old son and two-year-old daughter, Wynter Cole Smith. Police were unable to locate the girl.

Trice was in a car accident in a Detroit suburb after police found him, but the girl was not with him. Searchers used dogs, drones and helicopters to search for her along a highway between Lansing and Detroit. FBI agents eventually found the girl’s body in an overgrown alley in Detroit. She had been strangled with a cell phone cord.

Federal prosecutors assumed jurisdiction over the case because the car and other tools used in the crime were manufactured outside of Michigan.

Trice pleaded guilty to kidnapping resulting in death in federal court in March, admitting that he abducted the girl from her home during an argument with her mother. Prosecutors dropped the child abduction charge, but Trice’s confession resulted in him facing a life sentence.

“Mr. Trice deeply regrets these tragic events and accepts responsibility for his actions,” Scott Graham, one of Trice’s attorneys, said in an email to the Associated Press on Friday.
