Michigan faces rollercoaster ride at back to school as classes are cancelled due to weather

Michigan faces rollercoaster ride at back to school as classes are cancelled due to weather

WESTLAND, Michigan (WXYZ) – “I want to inform you that due to the extreme temperatures forecast for the next two days, we will be implementing half-day schedules.”

This is part of the voicemail that mother Amy Rumrill received from the American Montessori Academy in Westland, which began the turbulent back-to-school week for her family.

“It was interesting, to say the least,” Rumrill told 7 News Detroit.

She said she received four voicemails this week just for her daughter, Ella, who just started sixth grade at the American Montessori Academy.

“She had a half day on Monday and then she was supposed to have a full day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,” Rumrill said.

Spoiler alert! That didn’t happen.

Rumrill said Monday, Tuesday and Thursday have been moved to half days because of the extreme heat.

Then the weather looked better and Wednesday was postponed again to a whole day.

But don’t get too comfortable!

After the violent storms on Tuesday night, the back-to-school rollercoaster got completely out of control at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday and classes were canceled for Wednesday.

At this point, Ella hadn’t had a full day yet. When we asked her how she felt about it, she said “sad.”

Ellla has an older brother, Carter, who is in the ninth grade at Loyola High School.

He missed school completely on Tuesday.

“I was excited to meet all the new teachers and stuff, but that never happened,” Carter said.

Luckily, Rumrill is self-employed and was able to make the last-minute adjustments, but she knows this has been a big problem for many other parents in Southeast Michigan.

Due to extreme heat, classes in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and Eastpointe Community Schools were only half-day this week.

Southfield public schools were completely closed on Tuesday.

Rumrill said she hopes the rest of the school year goes more smoothly, but as we all know, Michigan weather is hard to get out of.

We keep our fingers crossed as the back-to-school rollercoaster ride continues.

“Basically every day is different,” said Ella.
