Michael has been absent from the ABC show in recent weeks as he treated his family to a vacation in the Bahamas before saying goodbye to his teenage daughters, who are heading back to college.

Isabella, 19, announced her return to the University of Southern California on Instagram with a snapshot together with her mother Jean Muggli. Her twin sister Sophia is also expected to return to Duke University on August 26, where her fall semester will begin.

For Michael, however, it was a bittersweet moment, as Isabella had been living on the East Coast for the past ten months after being diagnosed with a brain tumor just weeks after arriving at college.

In an interview with GMA in January, she explained that she had been suffering from “terrible headaches” at the beginning of her freshman year and was unable to walk by October.

Isabella was diagnosed with medulloblastoma and doctors discovered a tumor in her brain that was “larger than a golf ball.”

She documented her journey on YouTube, describing the pain chemotherapy can cause in the body as “like a heart attack” and sharing other honest details of life with chemotherapy.

“My eyes are strained; it hurts when I look to the side,” she revealed. “My whole mouth feels like I’ve had a huge root canal. Every single tooth was just ripped out and not even surgically put back in. My jaw hurts, the bottom of my tongue hurts. It hurts when I swallow water.”

In July, she was declared cancer-free after treatment in North Carolina and shared photos of herself ringing the bell in the hospital.
