Machine Gun Kelly’s father witnessed his own father die from an accidental gunshot wound.
The rapper’s father had to stand trial for the alleged murder of his own father at the age of nine.
“I was always told that her father dropped the gun and basically got his head blown off,” the musician, who now performs under the moniker MGK, recalled on the Aug. 5 episode of Bunnie Xo’s “Dumb Blonde” podcast.
“It all happened in my father’s room when I was nine years old. He and my grandmother were charged with murder. They were both acquitted.”
The artist, whose real name is Colson Baker, also said that as a child he was often annoyed by his father when he would “freak out” because of “loud noise.”
“I was like, ‘You should be a man, dude. Why are you acting like that?’ and that made me just hate him,” the 34-year-old singer of “Bad Things” revealed.
“And then you sit there and think of a boy who was on trial for the murder of his father at the age of nine… I had a very interesting conversation with him on his deathbed about that moment.”
MGK was raised by his father after his mother left the family.
His father died in 2020.
The “Bloody Valentine” artist announced the news via Instagram, explaining that he had been planning to celebrate the first anniversary of his album “Hotel Diablo” when he received the news.
“This album was everything I wanted to say, and I know it’s close to my fans’ hearts… but my father took his last breath this morning, and I have never felt such deep pain in my life.”
“I’m putting my phone down,” he continued. “I love you guys. Thank you, guys, for everything.”
MGK said in the podcast that he now realizes how traumatic his father’s childhood was and how difficult it must have been.
“In my situation with my father, he was so tormented by the worst crap I think a child can go through that he had to deal with it, but at the same time, almost every possible bad circumstance was against him.”
“It’s almost like the expectations are too high,” he continued. “Because we think they know everything because we grew up looking up to them. But we’re all just lost and trying to figure it out.”
The “Bird Box” star first revealed his tragic family history in his 2022 documentary “Life in Pink.”
“He watched his father die before his eyes, bleeding to death on the floor and being shot in the head with a shotgun in his apartment,” the musician says in the documentary, while reading a 1968 newspaper article with the headline: “Army Chief Warrant Officer Found Shot to Death in Sandia Base Apartment.”
The Grammy nominee spoke to his 15-year-old daughter Casie about his father, telling her, “It’s crazy because they actually put my dad on trial when he was 9 years old.”
MGK added that his father’s unresolved trauma “came to the surface for me as I grew up.”
