The New York Mets have overcome a lot in the 2024 season, but no hurdle has been greater than the number of injuries the Blue and Orange have suffered. Despite all of this, the Blue and Orange remain in the thick of the playoff race and have now activated a former All-Star from the injured list.

According to Tim Healey of Newsday, the Mets have activated Starling Marte from the injured list.

The Dominican-born player has been on the injured list since the end of June after suffering a bone bruise on his right knee, which Marte had already taken out of the lineup several times.

The 35-year-old said last month that the injury was caused by overuse and that he had to continue playing despite pain, which seemed to affect him on the field. The former Gold Glove winner was among the worst right fielders in terms of runs prevented and outs above average.

The knee issue did not affect his hitting, however, as Marte returned to his pre-injury offensive form, posting a .278/.328/.416 batting average with seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 66 games, which will likely benefit him in his new role.

Marte may no longer be an everyday outfielder

Following the signing of Jesse Winker at the trade deadline and Marte’s struggles in the outfield, the 35-year-old may no longer be on the roster every day as a right fielder.

Instead, Marte, who had been an exceptionally good swinger before his knee injury, could play as designated hitter.

This would allow Mets manager Carlos Mendoza to keep the Dominican native on the roster while giving him some rest, which the Blue and Orange have tried to do to keep him fresh.

Time will tell what role Marte will have for the Mets in the final stretch, but it appears that his days of playing right field every day are numbered.
