Mercer County prepares for Tropical Depression Debby

Mercer County prepares for Tropical Depression Debby

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) – As the remnants of Tropical Depression Debby make their way across the two Virginia states, Mercer County is taking steps to ensure emergency responders are prepared for any severe weather.

Keith Gunnoe, Mercer County Emergency Management Director, believes that given the recent drought in our area, the county’s waterways should be able to accommodate any potential rainfall.

“I’ve checked most of the major rivers and streams in our county and because of the drought, the streams are actually pretty low, so if the rainfall comes slowly over a 24-hour period, I think the streams and rivers will handle it pretty well,” Gunnoe said.

He believes that those who already have experience with flooding should be prepared for all possible consequences.

“But most of the residents of these flood-prone communities in our county are pretty resilient people, they’re used to dealing with it. But of course we want them to stay alert and pay attention. I mean, it’s a weather forecast, so it could change,” Gunnoe said.

Gunnoe adds that you should stay up to date with current weather forecasts to get a better idea of how areas might be affected by severe weather.

“I would urge residents to ensure they have means of receiving weather alerts and of course to keep an eye on them and stay updated on the weather forecast and the information that is being published in case there is any unusual infrared flooding,” Gunnoe said.
