SAN JOSE, Calif., August 21, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–McAfee, a global leader in online protection, today announced the launch of McAfee® Deepfake Detector, the latest addition to the company’s AI-powered product suite. With AI-generated videos, known as deepfakes, flooding the internet and circulating on social media, we now live in a world where what we see and hear is no longer credible. To combat the rise of AI fraud and misinformation, McAfee is partnering with Lenovo to bring powerful AI-based deepfake detection capabilities to customers who purchase select Lenovo AI PCs starting today. To educate consumers, McAfee is also launching the Smart AI Hub with resources and interactive elements to raise awareness about deepfakes and AI-driven fraud.

The advent of AI has changed the game for cybercriminals, who are developing increasingly convincing, personalized, AI-generated scams at scale. The impact of a deepfake scam can be life-changing, with victims reporting losses ranging from $250 to over half a million dollars.1 While not all AI content is created with malicious intent, the ability to detect whether a video is real or fake helps consumers make smart and informed decisions.

“Knowledge is power, and that’s never been more true than in the AI-driven world we live in today,” said Roma Majumder, senior vice president of product at McAfee. “You no longer have to wonder if that Warren Buffet investment scheme is legitimate, if Taylor Swift really wants to give away cookware to fans, or if those words were actually said by a politician. The answers are available to you automatically and within seconds with McAfee Deepfake Detector.”

“At McAfee, we are inspired by the transformative potential of AI and want to shape a future where AI is used for good. By working with Lenovo, we can deliver the most effective, automated, AI-powered deepfake detection and give people a powerful digital guard on their PCs. Together, we can use AI in new and revolutionary ways and provide individuals with the most advanced deepfake detection so they can safely and confidently navigate the evolving online world.”

“The collaboration between Lenovo and McAfee combines the unique expertise of two global leaders to deliver innovative solutions that give consumers more confidence in the content they view online,” said Igor Bergman, vice president of Lenovo Cloud and Software, Intelligent Devices Group. “Data shows that nearly two-thirds of people (64%) are more concerned about deepfakes today than they were a year ago.2“Lenovo’s expertise as a leading provider of end-to-end technology solutions and McAfee’s experience in AI-powered online protection complement each other perfectly, optimizing hardware and software capabilities for the benefit of the consumer.”

Improved performance with data protection

With McAfee® Deepfake Detector, now available exclusively on select Lenovo AI PCs, consumers who opt in will be notified within seconds when AI-altered audio is detected in videos, without having to rely on tedious manual video uploads. Trained on nearly 200,000 samples and leveraging the power of select Lenovo AI PCs equipped with an NPU, McAfee’s AI detection models perform the entire identification process—called inference—directly on the PC, maximizing on-device processing to keep private user data out of the cloud. McAfee does not collect or record a user’s audio in any way, and the user is always in control and can turn audio detection on or off as desired.

By leveraging the NPU and performing analytics on-device, McAfee provides comprehensive data protection, increases processing speed compared to cloud-based usage, and improves battery life. These advancements significantly improve the consumer experience by enabling users to make informed decisions about the content they watch and protecting them from cybercriminals who manipulate video audio without impacting the speed of their PC. This ensures that users can use their PC as usual – whether gaming, browsing, or watching videos – while McAfee Deepfake Detector works quietly in the background, protecting users from deception and alerting them to potential scams without impacting performance.
