Incumbent Steuben County and Family Court Judge Mathew K. McCarthy recently announced his intention to run for that seat in the upcoming November election.

McCarthy, who has also been a Corning Municipal Court judge for the past 10 years, said he has presided over thousands of criminal and family court cases, the same types of cases that one faces on a daily basis in that position. McCarthy is running for the Steuben County seat being vacated by the retirement of Judge Philip J. Roche.

“With Judge Roche’s retirement and the encouragement of many of my colleagues and those whose livelihoods depend on an efficient and fair legal system, I have made the decision to use my nearly 20 years of legal and judicial experience to seek the permanent position of Steuben County Judge and Family Court Judge,” McCarthy said. “My ten years of judicial experience have enabled me to serve Steuben County as an acting judge in Corning, Hornell and Bath.”

McCarthy said the court system plays a key role in keeping Steuben County and its families safe.

“It is critical to have a judge who has the right experience to deal with current bail reform and disclosure requirements, to properly apply complex criminal and family law, and who understands and respects the values of our community,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy was elected a full-time judge of the Corning Municipal Court in 2014 and has served in dual roles as a municipal court judge and acting district and family court judge since January 1, 2015.

Prior to his election, McCarthy worked as a prosecutor in the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office for over nine years, represented children in Family Court as a children’s advocate for over ten years, and maintained a private law practice with his father at McCarthy Law in Bath for over ten years.
