Mass accident in Wise County could have been avoided by wearing seat belts

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a crash in Wise County that left four people dead and ten others injured.

According to DPS officials, a pickup truck from Florida carrying 14 people was driving through Alvord in Wise County on August 28 when the truck crashed and overturned.

“It went off the left side of the road and landed in the median. The driver then overcorrected to the opposite side, causing the vehicle to swerve sideways and eventually roll over several times,” said Sergeant Tony De Le Cerda of the Texas DPS.

Several passengers were thrown from the car. When the emergency services arrived, three of them, including the driver, were already dead.

Another passenger died in hospital. Ten others were taken to several hospitals for further treatment.

“Three were transported by helicopter to different hospitals. Eight were transported by ambulance to different hospitals,” Cerda said.

Cerda said only one of the 14 people in the van was wearing a seatbelt.

“If everyone had been wearing their seatbelts, I know there would be more people with us now,” Cerda said.

All 14 people involved in the accident are adults; the condition of the 10 people hospitalized is unknown.
