MILFORD, PA, August 13, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Barbara M. Kelly, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen based on their current credential value. Factors such as position, notable accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are considered during the selection process.

Dr. Kelly is a distinguished academic and author known for her contributions to American cultural history and higher education. She is an Adjunct Professor Emerita of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, where she has been influential since 1985.

Dr. Kelly began her career on campus in 1985 as Curator of Rare Books and Long Island Studies in the University Library, managing the rare book collections, including the notable Kroul Collection of materials from interwar Germany, as well as the Nila Banton Smith Collection of children’s books, which includes textbooks from the colonial era. Her expertise in local history, genealogy, and interwar Germany made her an invaluable resource for individuals researching both Long Island history and the rise of German National Socialism.

In 2001, Dr. Kelly moved into a teaching position at Hofstra University’s School of Communication, where she served as an associate professor of media studies. Her academic focus on the politics of house and home, particularly the influence of government financing on the postwar suburban environment, was exemplified by her dissertation on Levittown. This work also launched Dr. Kelly’s academic career and enabled her to conduct important research during her time at Hofstra.

Dr. Kelly’s academic career began with a Bachelor of Arts from St. Joseph’s College in Brentwood, New York. She continued her education at SUNY Stony Brook, where she earned her Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in American Cultural History.

Dr. Kelly is also a prolific author. In addition to her previous book, Expanding the American Dream, a cultural history of post-war Levittown, Dr. Kelly wrote her first novel, Gather The Fragments, in 2019. This book highlights the struggles of homeless single mothers raising children in modern society. With this publication, she hopes to portray single mothers as admirable individuals who do not deserve discrimination. Writing remains a great passion for Dr. Kelly as she continues to explore historical narratives in the hopes of contributing to a more peaceful society through her work.

In addition to her academic and literary achievements, Dr. Kelly has served as Vice President of the Long Island Studies Council. Her commitment to civic engagement is evident in her involvement with the Safe Haven women’s shelter, where she supports women in need.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Kelly has received numerous awards, including the Nassau County American Legion Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to scholarship and society. Her ongoing involvement in educational research and writing underscores her legacy as a scholar committed to making significant contributions to the understanding of history and culture.
