NORTH BAY, CA — A young Petaluma man died in a car crash in Marin County on Tuesday, the Marin County Coroner’s Office said.

Carlos Enrique Verdugo-Cruz, 19, of Petaluma was involved in a head-on collision shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday in the 440 block of Nicasio Valley Road near Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in the San Geronimo Valley, according to Marin County Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding.

Verdugo-Cruz was driving a Honda Civic sedan south when he failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the painted double yellow lines and collided with a Ford Expedition traveling north on the same road, Fielding said.

The other driver was trapped in his Ford Expedition and was freed by rescue workers and then taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries.

Witnesses told authorities that Verdugo-Cruz was speeding immediately before the accident, Fielding said.

“The Marin County Sheriff’s Office and the Coroner Division extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Verdugo-Cruz,” Fielding said.

As of Thursday, a GoFundMe campaign for Verdugo-Cruz had raised more than $10,000 for memorial costs.
