Marietta and Paulding County celebrate early birthday of late Deputy Brandon Cunningham

Marietta and Paulding County celebrate early birthday of late Deputy Brandon Cunningham

The community came together Wednesday to honor the life of a Paulding County sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty and to support his family.

The celebration of life was held at 3 Amigos Restaurant in Marietta, owned by the family of Deputy Brandon Cunningham.

“It’s very heartwarming to see everyone standing up for us,” said Maria Cunningham, Deputy Cunningham’s sister-in-law.

“We have been showered with love and support from the entire Marietta community and the Paulding community. Everyone has showered us with love,” said Kevin Cunningham, Deputy Cunningham’s brother.

Among the crowd were police officers from numerous agencies.

“I’ve been in law enforcement for many years,” said Canton Police Chief Marty Ferrell. “Every time something like this happens, it rips a piece out of your soul.”

Deputy Brandon Cunningham was shot and killed on August 17 while responding to a private emergency call.

“The last week has been one of the hardest weeks my family has ever been through, but today I can safely say that we are so happy to be celebrating his life rather than crying over his end,” said Maria Cunningham.

The celebration featured food, drinks and children’s activities, with proceeds going to Deputy Cunningham’s two children.

The Paulding Public Safety Association is also raising money for the family.

“Commemorative T-shirts, memorial bracelets, challenge coins. We collected donations and sold shirts today. They sold out very quickly,” said Linda Verscharen of the Paulding Public Safety Association.

Deputy Cunningham would have turned 31 this Friday. There was a cake for his birthday. There was also a mariachi band.

It was about honoring the life of a man who dedicated his life to protection and service.

“Seeing the amount of love and respect that has been shown to my brother definitely helps me in the healing process. It brings a smile to my face rather than tears,” said Kevin Cunningham.
