Manatee County Animal Control receives influx of lost pets after Debby

It’s been a busy week for Jennifer Hume of the Manatee County Animal Welfare Association and her team as they have worked tirelessly to rescue pets who were separated from their families or adopted as strays following Tropical Storm Debby.

“We have had 130 animals come to us since last week,” Hume said.

In the hope of returning some of them to their owners, she is urging locals to get in touch or keep an eye out.

“Come to our shelter in Bishop in person. That way you can see the animals and be assured they’re yours,” Hume added. “Other than that, your community on social media is great, so checking missing pet pages is important. 941 is a great group.”

Selected animals found in severely affected areas are held for up to 14 days before being made available for adoption, but most animals taken in are held for three days for cats and five days for dogs.

To make room for those who ultimately stay, and in honor of Clear the Shelters month, the county is waiving all adoption fees for dogs and cats at its locations that were already at full capacity.

“We currently have 300 animals in our care, so you can always go to our location in Palmetto where we have our dogs available for adoption. We have 105 dogs,” Hume said. “At Bishop we have kittens for adoption, dogs and our bunnies, and Cat Town in Bradenton has 50 cats and kittens for adoption.”
