Man shot by Phoenix police worked to get his life back on track: ‘Protector and provider’

Man shot by Phoenix police worked to get his life back on track: ‘Protector and provider’

On Sunday evening, a candlelight memorial service was held for a Man shot by police in Phoenix early Saturday morning.

The shooting occurred on August 10 shortly after 3:30 a.m. near 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

The call began with reports of “gunshots” and ended with the killing of a man. The man is identified as 46-year-old Imani Jackson.

According to his family, he had some difficulties in the past, but he has turned his life around and now devotes his time to work, AA meetings and caring for his grandchildren.

One day after his death, his relatives are asking for answers to their questions about his death.

Imani’s family says he was “the man” – someone who cared about his family and the community around him.

“He was the protector and provider of the family,” Hune’e Jones said during a candlelight vigil on the evening of August 11.

His daughter Jazmine Jackson said he impacted the lives of many people he touched.

“My friends from middle school remember my dad. They all told me they looked up to him as a father figure because he was just… because they didn’t have a father.”

She is now without her father.

Phoenix police said officers initially responded to a report of a shooting and then attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

“The driver of that vehicle failed to comply, exited his vehicle and ran eastbound on Buckeye Road. Officers gave chase and gave directions. At one point during that chase, the man exiting the vehicle actually reached into his waistband, which is when the officer-involved shooting occurred,” said Phoenix Police Sergeant Rob Scherer.

Imani’s family said they learned of the shooting when he did not return home on time.

“My mom was the one driving around looking for my dad because he said he had to be home in about 30 minutes to an hour and she was worried,” Jazmine said. “She had this feeling in her stomach and thought, ‘Something is wrong.'”

Then her mother came to the scene of the shooting.

“She saw his car parked here and then she saw someone laying right there. He was wearing these pants that we got him for Father’s Day and a black shirt and he was just laying there,” Jazmine said.

Surveillance video shows Imani walking away with his hands raised, but then disappears from the frame. Moments later, two police officers can be seen jogging behind him.

“I just want the body camera footage. I want to know if he had a weapon on him because in the footage from that store I saw he had his phone in his hand,” she said.

The grieving family is left with many questions and mourns the loss of the family patriarch.

“I really wanted to keep it positive, but I’m not going to lie. It’s not a positive situation. He always said, ‘I hope I don’t die at the hands of the police,'” Hune’e said.

FOX 10 reached out to the department to clarify how the shooting occurred. Phoenix police say Imani was struck by a bullet at least once.

FOX 10 asked how many shots were fired and how many times he was hit. Phoenix police said they will release more details as part of their two-week transparency policy.
