Man flees from police after buying gun with fake bank check

SHREVEPORT, Louisiana (KSLA) – A man used a fake cashier’s check to purchase a gun from a vendor in the Shreveport Police Department parking lot and was later arrested after leading officers on a chase.

It began on August 16, when members of the Shreveport Police Department’s (SPD) Violent Crimes Abatement Team (VCAT) received a complaint about 22-year-old Derion Kelly. The complainant met Kelly in the parking lot of the Shreveport Police Station and exchanged a firearm for a cashier’s check. When the clerk attempted to cash the check, they discovered it was counterfeit.

On August 20, officers attempted to contact Kelly in the SPD parking lot. As Kelly entered the parking lot, VCAT officers and a Shreveport City Marshal deputy approached him. Kelly fled the scene and collided with the Shreveport City Marshal deputy’s vehicle. VCAT officers pursued Kelly’s Ford Mustang, which later collided with a parked vehicle and a home on Logan Street.

Kelly attempted to flee on foot but was quickly caught by a VCAT officer.

While searching Kelly’s vehicle, officers discovered a counterfeit check, stolen firearms and a bullet casing.

Kelly was taken to a local hospital for treatment and charged with auto theft, forgery, writing bad checks, aggravated escape, aggravated criminal damage to property and resisting an officer.

“We thank the Shreveport City Marshal’s Office for their continued support in apprehending violent criminals in our city,” SPD said.
