Man charged after multiple armed robberies in Union County, police say

MONROE, NC (WBTV) – A man has been charged following several armed robberies in Union County, according to Monroe Police.

Leiland Nunez, 18, was arrested Friday evening on Farm Pond Lane in Indian Trail and charged with multiple counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

On Wednesday, August 14, at 1:49 a.m., officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at Circle K, located at 3006 Old Charlotte Hwy. A person had entered the store with a gun and demanded cash from the clerk working inside. After the robbery, the suspect fled the store before officers arrived.

On Thursday, August 15, at 11 p.m., Monroe Police officers responded to another report of an armed robbery at City Tobacco on Walkup Avenue. A person matching the description had entered the store with a gun and demanded cash from the clerk working there. He ran out of the store before officers arrived.

The investigation led detectives to 6002 Farm Pond Ln. in Indian Trail. When they arrived, police say Nunez attempted to escape through the back door of the home, but was stopped by officers. Wingate police officers identified him as a suspect in an armed robbery in Wingate and arrested and charged him with that armed robbery.

With the help of the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Wingate Police Department, Monroe Detectives continued their investigation and were able to gather evidence linking Nunez to the armed robberies in Monroe.

Monroe Police investigators charged Nunez with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Wingate Police charged Nunez with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon for an incident in Wingate.

Nunez is currently being held at the Union County Detention Center. The conditions of his release have not yet been determined.
