Machine Gun Kelly can’t rely on a major league career if his music career takes a turn for the worse.

The 34-year-old rapper threw out the first pitch at Cleveland’s Progressive Field on Tuesday, August 13, before the Guardians faced the Chicago Cubs in a rematch of the 2016 World Series. Kelly made sure things didn’t go as expected.

Instead of standing on the mound and throwing the ball lightly to home plate as thousands have done before him, Kelly had other ideas. Wearing a red, custom-made “MGK” Guardians jersey, he waited for a signal from his catcher, admittedly giving a solid impression of a major league pitcher. His windup also started normally, with the right-hander lifting the ball over his head and kicking with his leg.

Then he paused. Kelly didn’t throw the ball toward his catcher. Instead, he sprinted to the third-base line and threw it into the crowd, ensuring an unsuspecting fan went home with a souvenir. Optimistically, the ball was just a few dozen feet too far for the left-hand batter.

A Houston native, Kelly began his music career in Cleveland. He attended the Guardians’ game on Tuesday (a 2-1 Cleveland win) as part of the team’s “MGK Day” promotion. The Guardians gave the first 10,000 guests in attendance a special bag of coffee from Kelly’s 27 Club Coffee.

It would be unfair to place Kelly’s intentionally bad pitch in the pantheon of bad first pitches, led by 50 cents‘s infamous throw to an unsuspecting cameraman at Citi Field in 2014. Anthony Fauci (Author)The first pitch of the COVID-shortened 2020 season wasn’t much better. This one was almost as far out as 50 Cent’s, but bounced onto the grass between the mound and home plate before rolling away.

Not even athletes are immune to terrible first throws. Michael Jordanwho played minor league baseball during his first retirement from the NBA, threw out the first pitch in a Chicago Cubs game in 1998. Sammy Sosa jersey, he threw the ball so far over Sosa’s head that the outfielder jumped from his crouched position behind the plate and could not catch it despite his outstretched arm.

Kelly’s throw was also a bit off, but at least it was a targeted throw for the people. However, it cannot keep up with the performance of the US team gymnast Simone Biles taken before Game 2 of the 2019 World Series. Wearing a Houston Astros jersey and jeans, she mastered a backflip twist, landed on both feet and fired a strike to home plate.

Kelly wasn’t the only celebrity to throw out a first pitch on Tuesday night. College basketball superstar Paige Bueckers returned to her home state of Minnesota to throw out the first pitch at Target Field before the Twins crushed the Kansas City Royals 13-3.
