CORAL GABLES, FLA. (WSVN) – It’s that time of year again and thousands of students in the Miami-Dade County public school system are returning to the classroom.

As students prepare for another year of their learning era, teachers have been busy this week preparing their classrooms for a new group of inquisitive minds.

For fifth-grade science teacher Alexia Archer, it’s more than just a teaching job.

“It’s a bond. They know I care about them all year long. It’s a safe, happy place,” Archer said. “There’s a lot of memories being made and laughter being shared. So every day isn’t just about science and Ms. A. It’s a bond, it’s a relationship.”

George Washington Carver Elementary School in Coral Gables held a preview day on Wednesday where parents could drop off school supplies and meet their children’s new teachers.

Keturah Goodine brings more than 10 years of teaching experience to the classroom as she prepares her learning space for a new group of third graders.

“They’re very honest. I like that they see the world with a clear vision, they’re not biased yet,” Goodine said. “So my job as a teacher is to facilitate those conversations and watch them unfold. I think that’s the most fulfilling job as a teacher.”

As the new school year begins, parents and students can take comfort in knowing that M-DCPS continues to be an “A” rated school district for the fourth time in five years.

“Everything we do is geared toward engaging our community,” says Patricia Fairclough, principal of George Washington Carver Elementary School.

Some parents may find it difficult to say goodbye on the first day of school, while others look forward to it.

“It’s very exciting. Honestly, I’m ready to get back into the routine,” said Tatiana Seijas. “It’s always good.”

And future third-grader Alessandra Seijas is ready for science class.

“What I like most about science is the animals,” she said. “I like to learn a lot about animals because I want to be a marine biologist.”

When asked what she was most looking forward to, Seijas said, “Learning.”

The first day of the 2024-25 school year in Miami-Dade County is Thursday.
