Lykens neighborhood joins forces to find missing six-year-old autistic boy

A six-year-old boy from Lykens was found on Friday afternoon after he went missing.

During the day, a large group of neighbors from Market Street, where the boy lives with his family, helped with the hours-long search.

Many neighbors told CBS21 News they sympathized with the parents of the little boy, who has an autism spectrum disorder.

“I know from experience that all I have to do is blink and my child is already halfway down the street,” says Kristen Kramer, a concerned neighbor.

Kramer, who has three children who are also on the spectrum, said she remembers once having to search for one of her children.

“I knew immediately how this family felt, and it is the worst feeling in the world,” she said.

When six-year-old Jonathan Pringle, who can also speak somewhat, went missing from home, it was heartwarming to see neighbors come together to find him.

“I saw so many neighbors, I saw people I knew, like teachers from school. I saw my kids’ occupational therapists from school. The police,” she said.

“Everyone has come together to help and this is a big deal,” said search party member Cheryl Yeater.

State police said they received help from more than 100 people and a witness spotted Pringle around 6:10 a.m.

However, Pringle’s grandmother, who did not want to appear on camera, told CBS21 that the boy was in the house next door when he was found.

Neighbors were not home at the time the boy disappeared and only discovered his presence when they returned home later that day.

“It’s very common for people with autism to run away, and sometimes it’s unavoidable. You just do your best and hope that the others are safe,” Kramer said.

She said it’s a frightening reality for many families with children affected by the autism spectrum. Unfortunately, she said, not everyone is as lucky with a happy ending as the Pringles.

“I’m just proud of how everyone handled everything and how everyone stuck together,” she said.

Jonathan Pringle’s grandparents said the boy was doing well after being rescued from a neighbor’s house and taken to hospital.
