Since its founding in 1947, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has had a global impact through its humanitarian and development arm, LWF World Service. Rooted in the Lutheran tradition of diakonia, or service to others, LWF World Service is dedicated to helping those in need regardless of their origin in 26 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

LWF World Service is particularly known for its timely and compassionate relief efforts in some of the most challenging environments. Through its presence in hard-to-reach areas, it protects human rights and provides critical services to vulnerable communities, including refugees, internally displaced people, and people affected by conflict or natural disasters. Its approach is community-based and people-centered, ensuring that the people it serves have a say in shaping their future.

LWF World Service’s work is characterized by its local roots and global connections, connecting the needs of local communities with international advocacy and dialogue. Its efforts are guided by the Sustainable Development Goals and focus on long-term solutions that address the root causes of poverty and uphold the dignity of every individual.

As the largest implementing member of the ACT (Action by Churches Together) Alliance, LWF World Service works with churches, interfaith partners and secular organizations, including the United Nations, to address new global challenges. Their engagement in partnerships and community enables them to respond flexibly and effectively to the diverse humanitarian needs around the world.

Through its work, LWF World Service embodies the Lutheran commitment to justice, peace and reconciliation, bringing hope and support to millions of people each year.
