Lubbock ISD begins its first day of school

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Wednesday is the first day of school for the children of Lubbock.

The first day of school can be hectic, but sixth-grade teacher Alexus Rodriquez and seventh-grade teacher Kayla Yeoman at Evans Middle School are prepared and excited for the kids to return.

“We just try to put on a friendly face and greet every kid with a smile on their face in the most exciting way possible,” Rodriquez said. “Having the kids back in the building brings so much energy to the school, I’m so excited to have them back. We’ve been back for a week, it’s just not the same without the kids here,” Yeoman said.

Eighth-grader Caleb Alexander says they are like family at Evans Middle School.

“Everyone acts like a natural family, even though we sometimes fight, but we still have a connection and treat each other like brothers and sisters,” said Alexander. “There is just a great sense of solidarity here and a great school spirit in general.”

His eighth-grade classmate Quinn Curry says his most important advice for incoming sixth-graders is to be yourself.

“Be yourself and just try to find a group of people that you really enjoy spending time with,” Curry said.

Sixth-grader Alex Romero says he is excited about what middle school has to offer.

“I’m looking forward to football, science, bands and things like that.”

Alexander says his best advice is to be a leader.

“Try not to act like everyone else. Do your own thing. Set your own trend, be yourself, be a leader, stand out, don’t follow, lead,” Alexander said.
