LSU Football secures third wide receiver from Louisiana

LSU Football secures third wide receiver from Louisiana

Three-star wide receiver from Destrehan (Louisiana) Phillip Wright has joined Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers, he announced via social media Friday afternoon.

After he withdrew his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines less than a week ago, Kelly and Co. were immediately considered favorites to sign the Bayou State stud.

Now that he has taken a few days to consider his options, one of America’s best receivers will be staying home to play for the Purple and Gold.

Wright is the third-ranked wide receiver in Louisiana and a coveted recruiting target, with the who’s who of college football constantly making offers to him.

Although he committed to Michigan in July, he reconsidered due to pressure from LSU as the program became more and more exciting.

On the last weekend of July, LSU hosted its annual Bayou Splash recruiting event, where Wright had the opportunity to come to Baton Rouge for an unofficial visit.

It was another trip that gave Wright the opportunity to enjoy the scenery of Death Valley around the Tigers and learn about the key commitments and goals for the 2025 cycle.

Shortly thereafter, he made the decision to resume his recruitment and resign from his commitment.

Now the 6’1″ and 175lb speedster is on his way to play for Kelly and the Tigers, where he will sign his contract during the Early Signing Period in December.

LSU now has the commitments of a trio of sought-after receivers: Derek Meadows (five-star player), TaRon “ManChild” Francis (No. 1 wide receiver in Louisiana) and Wright, who is new to the team.

Position coach Cortez Hankton has gone full throttle in the 2025 cycle, has already made three commitments and has his sights set on others making the move sooner rather than later.

Thanks to Wright’s commitment, he is now part of the third-best recruiting class in America, continuing to work his way up the rankings with the number one spot within reach.

Kelly and the Tigers are in the midst of a battle for several remaining top targets, including five-star players Jonah Williams (No. 1 safety) and Jamie Ffrench (top-5 WR) in the current cycle.

In the last 24 hours, LSU was able to secure the commitments of two promising young players for 2025: Wright joins Tennessee native CJ Jimcoily.

CJ Jimcoily: 4-star security

Brian Kelly and the LSU football team were able to land a commitment from CJ Jimcoily, safety from Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday afternoon after the top defensive back made his decision public.

The four-star prospect for the 2025 cycle chose the Tigers over Stanford, Tennessee and Alabama after trimming his list to four finalists weeks ago.

Now the Bayou Bengals have secured the 6’3″ and 215lb player, who will immediately become a key figure for the future of the defensive backfield.

Jimcoily, the second safety in the 2025 class alongside Destrehan (Louisiana) star Jhase Thomas, can be used in countless ways by defensive coordinator Blake Baker.

He packs tremendous size and can be utilized in the new STAR role as a hybrid safety/linebacker; the program is in danger given the immense potential he packs.

Jimcoily had the Stanford Cardinal at the top of his list, with this candidate ultimately coming down to relationships with the LSU staff, particularly safety coach Jake Olsen.

Jimcoily is a player who is a workhorse in the classroom and boasts a grade point average above 4.0, which gave Stanford a boost in his recruitment in that area, but LSU laid out a plan that gave him a chance to shine both on and off the field.

Jimcoily has made quite a few visits this summer, attracting attention from LSU, Tennessee, Alabama and Stanford.

For LSU, there were a few factors that made sense for the program to win. Jimcoily’s father grew up in the New Orleans area and still has family in Louisiana. This was a huge advantage for the Bayou Bengals program heading into the home stretch.

With the recruiting freeze in full swing last July, the coveted safety had time to weigh his options before going public.

Now both Wright and Jimcoily join LSU’s third-best recruiting class after receiving No. 20 and No. 21 commitments.
