Long County continues to battle flooding after Debby’s landfall in southeast Georgia

LONG COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Mill Pond Road in Long County is now closed and completely washed out and destroyed after Tropical Storm Debby made landfall in southeast Georgia.

Most of the area is normally dry, but now it is filled with water.

Those responsible said they never expected something like this to happen.

“It’s a little overwhelming,” said Robert Parker.

Robert Parker, chairman of the Long County Board of Commissioners, showed us Mill Pond Road. It is now closed, forcing people to take other routes. Like many other roads in the area.

“Our public works departments are working around the clock. Our sheriff’s office, our fire department, our EMS and all of our emergency services are of course working around the clock,” Parker said.

They do their best to help people through the process.

“We just have to be patient and wait for the water to recede. There is no way to speed up the receding of the water. And then when it recedes, we will begin making the necessary repairs to the roads,” Parker said.

And this week we told you about a flooded community, the Crawford neighborhood. Affected by this flood. He says it’s an area where there’s a lot of work to be done.

“There could be some improvement in drainage there. But ultimately it was built in a lowland area along the creek bank that had already overflowed its banks,” Parker said.

WTOC crews have been out across our region checking on families and communities affected by this flooding. Find all of our coverage here.
