Local nonprofit breathes new life into old South Omaha building

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – An old building in South Omaha on Upland Parkway and near 30th Street is finally getting a new lease on life.

It was once home to the Jetter Brewery, but has stood abandoned for years.

“The building was a ruin,” said Omaha resident Alex Pulciani.

Canopy South is behind the revitalization effort, transforming the building into a new community space and office space for the nonprofit organization.

Alec Pulciani, who used to live near the building, said workers have been working hard over the past few months.

“I think building this building has made things safer and cleaner,” Pulciani said.

South Omaha leader Marcos Mora told 6 News that as the area continues to grow, more places for people to gather will be needed.

“The park looks much nicer now and will really be a great asset to the community,” Mora said.

This isn’t the only project the nonprofit is involved in. It’s also renovating a building on South 24th Street to turn it into a workforce development center.

“If it can be renovated, that’s great,” Mora said. “We’ve seen different companies do that, but if it’s old, we might start over.”

There is still a lot of work to be done before the space can open its doors to the community.

Pulciani will be ready when the time comes.

“This park is a pillar of the community and I think any development of it will be a good thing,” Pulciani said.

Canopy South developers said they had hoped to complete construction in April, but that move was delayed due to the approval of funds for the project.

They expect construction to be completed in the next few weeks. However, it is not yet clear when the building will officially open.
