Livvy Dunne reacted in disbelief to Pirates’ epic collapse at Paul Skene’s start

Livvy Dunne reacted in disbelief to Pirates’ epic collapse at Paul Skene’s start

The Pittsburgh Pirates led the Chicago Cubs 10-3 after five innings at Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon. Pitcher Paul Skenes, the team’s Rookie of the Year candidate, took a shower knowing his ninth win of the season was already a done deal.

Until it wasn’t anymore.

The Pirates’ quick demise resulted in the Cubs scoring two runs in the seventh inning, three in the eighth, and six in the ninth to win 14-10, dropping their winning probability from 99 percent to 1 percent in just a few innings.

When is a seven-point lead not safe? Skenes and his girlfriend, gymnast and social media personality Livvy Dunne, learned that the hard way.

Dunne couldn’t help but react to the epic breakdown via Twitter/X on Wednesday afternoon:

A win probably means little in the grand scheme of things for Skenes or the Pirates. With an 8-2 record and a 2.23 earned run average, Skenes just needs to finish the season healthy to stay in the conversation for Rookie of the Year. The Pirates, for their part, have no plans to reduce his workload.

The defeat also does not change anything in the Wild Card rankings – at least not for Pittsburgh. At 62-71, they are 10.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves, who can secure the third and final postseason spot in the National League.

The Cubs (68-66) used the sweep of the three-game series to increase their record for the season back above .500 and thus at least get back into the playoff present.

Chicago is five games behind Atlanta, with only the New York Mets (69-63) standing between them and the Braves in the Wild Card standings.

The San Francisco Giants (67-66) are a half-game behind, so the Cubs’ position could change in an instant. But they’ll likely be within striking distance in September, a year after missing the playoffs by a single game. That’s not the worst position to be in.

If the Cubs make the postseason this year, they will have Wednesday’s comeback win to thank for it.

With the score at 10-3, Christian Bethancourt’s two-run home run against Kyle Nicolas in the seventh inning cut the deficit to 10-5. Bethancourt’s two-run double in the eighth inning cut the deficit to 10-7. Bethancourt scored later in the inning to bring Chicago within 10-8.

In the ninth inning, the Cubs loaded the bases against Pirates closer David Bednar and managed just one out. With two outs and the score at 10-9, it was Bethancourt who played the hero again. His two-run single put Chicago ahead 11-10 – and secured the Cubs’ lead for good.

Jalen Beeks relieved Bednar and allowed three more runs, but the damage was done.

If Dunne’s nearly 150,000 followers on Twitter/X didn’t know about the Pirates’ bullpen woes before Wednesday, they do now.
