Little League World Series Weather Forecast: Expect Thunderstorms in South Williamsport

STATEN ISLAND, NY — The weather could hold some surprises this weekend in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where the Little League World Series is being held.

According to Bob Larson, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, Thursday will be sunny and the high will be around 31 degrees. That’s good news for Staten Island’s own South Shore Little League team, which represents the Metro Region. South Shore opens its World Series schedule at 3 p.m. Thursday against Mountain Region champion Nevada.

Temperatures will fall to 21 degrees on Thursday evening before giving way to partly sunny skies on Friday.

Larson predicted Friday will be a warm but not overly hot day with slightly rising humidity. The daytime high is expected to be around 30 degrees, Larson said.

The first rainfall is expected on Friday night; any storms are expected to pass through after 10 p.m.

Although the clouds will cool temperatures somewhat, the increased humidity will prevent any real relief; the daytime high is expected to reach 27.6 degrees Celsius, Larson said.

A rainy route

Some showers and thunderstorms are expected on Saturday, but Larson points out that this rain will not cause any scheduled games to be canceled. The greatest chance of thunderstorms will be in the evening.

There is a real possibility of a strikeout on Sunday, with Larson warning of “widespread” rain showers and thunderstorms that could occur any time during the day.

Despite the inclement weather, Larson does not believe all games will be canceled due to rain, although Sunday is the day with the greatest likelihood of delays or postponements.

For Sunday, AccuWeather predicts highs of 74 and lows of 66.

A week of ball games

According to Larson, Monday will be cloudy and the high temperature will be between 24 and 27 degrees.

There may be a few showers in the evening to end the wet weather before a “pleasant” week begins.

Rain-free days with low humidity and highs around 70 degrees will make for a week similar to a September week, Larson said. Those desirable conditions will continue through Friday and should provide some favorable conditions for play.
