It was a big day in Williamsport.

On Monday, four U.S. and four international teams tried to avoid their first loss and put themselves in a good position to reach their respective championship games.

The losers must now expect elimination and hope that their pitching team can meet the upcoming challenge.

It was a courageous performance for Tokyo.

Pitcher Kanta Iwashita led the way, allowing one run and five hits and striking out 11 Venezuelan batters. The Japanese offense wasn’t particularly strong, managing just four hits on the day, but it was enough to take the win by one run.

Japan struck first when Yuzuki Ozawa hit a ball over the right fielder’s head for an RBI double.

A single by Simón Vicheria in the bottom of the third inning tied the score, but Japan scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.

Japan is now just one win away from the International Championship Game, while Venezuela awaits an elimination match against Aruba on Tuesday.
