“You know my name,” sings Chris Cornell at the beginning of the 2006 Casino Royale. The song is of course a cheeky allusion to the way Casino Royale reboots the Bond franchise with Daniel Craig in the lead role. However, it could also refer to the man behind the camera in Craig’s debut. After all, Casino Royale Director Martin Campbell also directed GoldenEyewhich ushered in a new era for Pierce Brosnan and the post-Cold War status quo.

Thanks to Campbell’s tight action direction, GoldenEye And Casino Royale Not only do they culminate in Brosnan and Craig’s tenure, but they are also considered by many to be two of the best Bond films of all time.

Given Campbell’s success, it’s no surprise that his name appears on a list of potential directors for the next installment in the franchise, which is set to bring a fresh new actor to the role of Agent 007. According to The Telegraph, Campbell is one of several directors being considered by production company Eon for the next Bond film. Other names on the list include Edward Berger, whose striking remake of Nothing new in the West received a nomination for Best Film and PoisonKelly Marcel, David Michôd from WildlifeBart Layton by The fraudsterand Yann Demange, who until recently was one of the filmmakers responsible for the implementation of Mahershala Ali’s problematic blade Film.

Whoever chooses Eon will have a big challenge ahead of them. The last entry No time to die ended Craig’s acclaimed run for good by killing (spoiler) James Bond at the end. As popular as Craig’s interpretation was, the franchise traditionally tends to change things up from one incumbent to the next – or even between installments. For example, Roger Moore switched from the Harlem-set, blaxploitation-inspired Live and let die in 1973 and the stupid The man with the golden gun in 1974 to the more traditional The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977. With Craig having downplayed the cheesier aspects of the Bond franchise throughout his time on screen, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the new era featured more gadgets, monologue-wielding villains, and over-the-top action sequences.
