“Life and Me” star announces cancer diagnosis

Danielle Fishel, who played Topanga Lawrence in the 1990s teen sitcom “Life and Me,” said she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Fishel, 43, announced the news on Monday’s podcast episode of “Pod Meets World,” which she co-hosts with former “Life and Me” stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong.

“I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, a form of breast cancer,” Fishel said. “It’s very, very, very early. Technically, it’s stage zero.”

“I’m fine. I’m having surgery to remove it. I’ll have follow-up care,” she added.

DCIS is a noninvasive cancer, meaning it is not aggressive and does not usually spread. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it is also very treatable.

Fishel said she was grateful her cancer diagnosis was discovered so early in the process. She attributed it to a recent text message reminder of her annual mammogram appointment, which she says she scheduled that same day.

“The fact that I’m so good at going to my doctor’s appointments… they determined so early that I was going to be OK,” Fishel said. “I want to share that because I hope it encourages everyone to go to the doctor; when it’s time for your appointment or you’ve never had an appointment, go. If you need to find out you have cancer, find out at stage zero if possible.”
