Liam Payne and Nicole Scherzinger join Netflix’s “Building the Band”

Bands are back in fashion!

On Friday, August 16, Netflix announced that Liam Payne, Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Rowland and AJ McLean will star in their new series Structure of the band.

Payne, Scherzinger and Rowland will serve as judges and mentors, while McLean will host the series, which follows individual singers as they attempt to form the next big band without ever having seen each other.

“The singers are in total control as they attempt to form their own bands in individual ‘booths’ without ever seeing each other. All they need is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit,” a synopsis for the show states. “What will happen when the bands finally meet and looks, choreography and style come into play? With incredible performances, gripping drama and one big goal – to find the next great music band – the stage is set for an unforgettable experience.”

That Payne, Scherzinger, Rowland and McLean were chosen for the series – which was first announced in May – is no surprise, as they are all current or former members of successful bands.

Payne, 30, was one of five members of the popular boy band One Direction who were released after their performance at The X-Factor in 2010. Member Zayn Malik left the band in 2015 and the group finally disbanded in 2016, with all members – including Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson – pursuing solo careers.

Scherzinger, 46, formerly fronted the Pussycat Dolls along with Kimberly Wyatt, Melody Thornton, Jessica Sutta, Ashley Roberts and Carmit Bachar. The band rose to worldwide fame in 2005 with the release of debut single “Don’t Cha” but disbanded in 2010.

Although they reunited in 2020 to release a new single and go on tour, the tour was delayed by the pandemic and later canceled. After the Dolls disbanded, Scherzinger took on several judging jobs on reality competitions, from The x-factor (she put together One Direction!) to The masked singer.

Rowland, 43, was a member of Destiny’s Child alongside Beyoncé and Michelle Williams. The group rose to fame in the ’90s and early 2000s with hits like “Say My Name” and “Bills, Bills, Bills,” but split up in 2006.

Each member has since pursued solo careers, with Rowland also serving as a judge on The X-Factor UK And The X-Factor USAand hosting Chasing destiny and as a trainer for The Voice of Australia.

Fans know 46-year-old McLean primarily as the “bad boy” of the Backstreet Boys. The most successful boy band of all time – which also includes Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter – rose to fame in the 90s with hits such as “Quit Playin’ Games (with My Heart)” and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”.

The group continued to tour the world and release new music, while also performing in Las Vegas for two years from 2017 to 2019.

With such diverse musical backgrounds, the four musicians are expected to “bring their unparalleled expertise and personal band experience to the competition” in the hopes that they can help create the next great band, according to Netflix.

Structure of the band is a brave and bold endeavor for everyone involved as we give the singers the power to create their own band based on chemistry first,” said Cat Lawson, Executive Producer, Remarkable Entertainment, Banijay UK in a statement. “Can they form a deeper connection with their bandmates when looks no longer matter? With limited bands, there are difficult decisions and heartbreaking moments along the way, but ultimately the result is truly amazing, and bands are formed that I believe are worthy of the very biggest stage!”

Filming for the series is set to begin this summer. Additional guest judges and challenges are expected to be announced at a later date. A premiere date has not yet been set.
