Leonardo DiCaprio in talks for the role of cult leader Jim Jones in his new film

Leonardo DiCaprio is currently in talks to play the notorious preacher and cult leader Jim Jones in a new feature film.

The Oscar-winning actor is in the final stages of talks to play the founder of the Peoples Temple, which orchestrated the Jonestown massacre in 1978.

According to Deadline, DiCaprio will also produce the film alongside Jennifer Davisson through his production company Appian Way, while Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle writer Scott Rosenberg, who is writing the screenplay, will serve as executive producer.

Although the Titanic star has not yet been officially confirmed for the lead role, those responsible at MGM have secured a seven-figure contract for the project in advance.

Jones, who founded the religious organization Peoples Temple in Indianapolis in 1955, built his remote jungle commune of Jonestown in Guyana in the early 1970s and encouraged his followers to live there with him. Amid press reports of human rights abuses in Jonestown, U.S. Representative Leo Ryan visited the settlement in November 1978 to investigate. As he was about to board his flight home a few days later, Ryan and four others were killed by gunmen on the runway.

Hours later, Jones staged the mass murder and suicide of more than 900 of his followers by urging them to drink Flavor Aid laced with cyanide. The 47-year-old leader died the same day from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

DiCaprio has many more projects in the pipeline. He will soon be seen opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up,” he has also shot Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and bought the US remake rights to the Oscar-winning Danish film “Another Round.”
