INDIANAPOLIS – Colts running back Jonathan Taylor is battling an injury.

Trey Sermon, who had emerged as a clear replacement for Taylor during the first two weeks of training camp, suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of his team’s season-opening game against Denver and left the game.

Sermon was examined in the injury tent after Indianapolis’ first drive and then briefly returned to the game before coaches took him out of the game.

The fourth-year running back had one catch for 12 yards before he was taken out of the game and Indianapolis took him out of the game for the rest of the game. He did not have a carry.

If Sermon is out for an extended period of time, the next two players competing for a spot behind Taylor are returning Tyler Goodson and second-year player Evan Hull.

Goodson took the opening runs in place of Sermon and assumed running back duties for the rest of the first quarter and part of the second. Hull, a fifth-round pick in 2023, is coming off a rookie season that he missed due to a knee injury sustained in the opening game.

Indianapolis does not have enough depth behind these two players.

Trey Sermon Statistics

Sermon has rushed for 346 yards on 78 carries and scored 1 touchdown in his career. Last season for the Colts, he had 160 rushing yards on 35 carries and 3 catches for 13 yards. Sermon was selected in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, but has also played for Philadelphia and the Colts.

Trey Sermon Contract

Sermon will receive $1,055,000 this season if he stays on the roster. He will be an unrestricted free agent next season.
