Leake County High School will perform in the 2024 Dunkin Thanksgiving Day Parade

LEAKE CO. (WLBT) – The Leake County High School Marching Band will soon represent the state in one of the oldest Thanksgiving Day parades in the country.

It has been around for 105 years.

The band consists of over seventy students who are now preparing for the event of their lives.

Those of you in Leak County who know the band’s legendary sound will see them perform nationally in less than three months. Bandleader Tanarri Moore says he applied for a big gig without expecting a response.

Just when he thought there was no hope left, the following happened after he applied, he said.

“It took them no more than 10-15 minutes to respond and let us know we were accepted.”

Moore and his classmates say this opportunity is a huge milestone for the school and the district.

They will make history as the first school from Mississippi to perform in this parade since 1919.

Kelsi Harris, a lead singer in the band, said she grew up watching her family perform on television.

“My family has watched the Thanksgiving Parade every year, so it is a blessing to be able to participate this year.”

However, the performance of your life comes with enormous costs.

The band’s support association is now looking for sponsors for the scholarship trip. The costs for hotel, meals and travel expenses will be around $800 for each band member.

“This is really important because we are the only school that represents the state. I put a lot of emphasis on this so that they can see how important this is and so that the city can see how important this is,” Moore said.

The band will be hitting the streets of the East Coast on Thanksgiving Day (November 28th) and thrilling audiences.
