Lawrence County hopes for another postseason run

High school football begins in Kentucky on Friday. Alan Short, the head coach of his alma mater, has been coaching the Lawrence County Bulldogs since 2016.

“These kids have worked extremely hard. They are very excited for the opportunity to compete,” Short told Eyewitness Sports. “People don’t realize how much work really goes into preparing for a football season. Our guys have definitely put in the time, effort and work. We can’t wait to compete on Friday night.”

Shorts Bulldogs finished 8-4 last season and look to build on that performance with a strong roster in 2024.

“Probably one of the most talented teams we’ve had here in recent years, probably since 2015,” the coach said. “We’ve been fortunate to have a lot of great players here, but I don’t think we’ve ever had such a great collection. We’re really looking forward to throwing the ball all over the court.”

The players are looking forward to a deep run in postseason play after being stopped in the second round by Rockcastle County on the way to Lexington last year.

“We train with all our might and take our conditioning very seriously,” said senior lineman Payton Lowe. “We take our training very, very, very seriously.”

Second-year lineman Ethan Preece said the team is constantly looking for ways to improve.

“I like our team. We just always find something to improve,” Preece said. “We’re growing every day and every rep is valuable.”

Coach Short has noticed that the team is listening to his staff and it is showing in practice.

“I’ve been really impressed with their willingness to learn so far,” Short said. “They’ve done a great job showing a positive, contagious attitude every day. I’m really blessed to be around these guys on a daily basis. I think we have what it takes to be something really special.”

Lawrence County will face Rowan County on Friday night at Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Stadium in Louisa, Kentucky.
